FAQs

Questions we get asked most.

Hire, lease and buying

Do I need an Ofcom licence to hire radios from Fellwave?

No. We hold an Ofcom supplier licence that covers radios we hire out for up to a year, so hired radios arrive already licensed. If you lease or buy, you need a licence in your own name and we apply for it for you.

How quickly can you deliver?

Next working day to most of mainland UK if you confirm by early afternoon. In Hampshire, Surrey and Berkshire we can often deliver the same day and set up on site.

Do the radios arrive ready to use?

Yes. We programme them to your channels, charge them, label them and test them before they go out. Hire packs come with a multi-charger, earpieces and spare batteries.

What is the minimum hire period?

One day. Events tend to hire by the day, weekend or week. Sites and venues hire by the month or longer, and the weekly rate comes down the longer the hire runs.

What range do the radios have?

A licensed 5 W handheld such as the FW-400 will cover a town centre, a school site or a showground. Inside large steel-framed buildings or across a big site we add a repeater, which roughly doubles the coverage. PoC radios work over the mobile network, so there is no range limit as long as there is signal.

Will your radios work with the radios we already have?

Usually. Our digital radios use the DMR standard, the same as Motorola, Hytera, Kenwood and Entel digital radios. In analogue mode they will talk to any licensed analogue radio on the same frequencies. Tell us the make and model and we will check.

What happens if a radio is lost or damaged?

Normal wear and tear is covered. Lost or badly damaged radios are charged at the replacement cost shown in the hire terms. If a radio develops a fault we send a replacement by next-day courier at no charge.

Is there a deposit?

Not usually for established businesses, schools, councils or charities. For a new account we may ask for a deposit or payment up front, and we will tell you before you commit.

Do you offer free hire for charities?

Yes. Registered charities and not-for-profit organisations can apply for free radio hire for their events, subject to availability and our checks. The charities page explains how it works.

Can we lease or buy instead of hiring?

Yes. A lease gives you a fixed monthly cost with batteries, support and replacements included. You can also buy outright, and we still handle the licensing and programming.
